How do You Choose the Best Translator For a Job?

By Team Babelprojekt | Languages, Workflow | 0 comment | 28 November, 2016 | 5

Being a project manager of a translation agency or language department, you must keep a lot in your mind. Of course, you have tools (or at least some excel files and/or calendar notifications) to remind you of the deadlines and an e-mail system to communicate with your colleagues. But it takes a lot more to make the most out of your work.

What do we mean by that?

It’s that you have to remember a whole bunch of things other than the deadlines and the languages and specialities of translators and proofreaders you are working with. Well, of course you have a database where you can see, if you, let’s say, recieve a document that needs to be translated from spanish to chinese, which one of the people suits this language pair. But are you sure you can totally keep all your previous experiences with this person in your mind? If you are working with people, the success also depends on their personalities, preferences, the way they need to be communicated with, the way they can work with other people in a team, et cetera.  These seems to be secondary things, but sure you can give us a couple of examples that prove they can make a difference. If you can’t remember all these (because, well, of course you’re a superhero, but you have other great skills, not the one having an infinite memory), do you have a professional database to rely on?

Babelprojekt is a system that has been built on the needs of translation agencies and language departments, or rather on the needs of people working in this area: owners, project managers, translators and proofreaders. This unique online translation management software does a lot of work for you. So, speaking on finding the best translators and proofreaders, in the database you can add the following notes to the people:

  • their speciality
  • the price their work usually cost
  • and other notes,

like they are good pairs with certain proofreaders, they are lazy, or they deliver he work ahead of the timeline, or their hair colors. Why is hair color important? We don’t know, but if it is important for you, you can even make a note about it. In the screenshot you can see how it looks: In the textbox you can type your search criteria. Should you be looking for the pair a certain colleague can work together effectively, you type “pair” and the result is shown above. Furthermore, you can see the number of ratings and the average rating.

Oh, and we mentioned that you might not be the superhero with infinite memory – so sure you have other fantastic skills. And there are many other skills like the ability to be invisible, to change your looks, to fly, or teleport even… and there is the one which enables you to choose the best tools to deliver excellent work. If this is your superpower, you will just love Babelprojekt!
